I really liked the article -- so much so that I posted it as a trigger to discussion in the Nautical Institute LinkedIn group.

This issue has to be addressed now, and just as seriously as pilot ladders or life-saving devices, as the tragedy on board the Chicago Express showed.

On a particularly stiff large bulk carrier that I sailed on way back in the early 80s, we had knotted ropes dangling from the deckhead, which we could hold on to for dear life if we needed to - which we did fairly often.

But yes, I have heard of batchmates tell me about really snazzy cockpit style bridges on ships where there was nothing much to hold on to, and where they made sure they had such ropes hanging too, if possible, especially for the quartermaster if the ship was on manual hand steering.

One of the cases you mention is Chicago Express. The BSU report adds concern about the state of knowledge regarding containership stability in bad weather and appeals for more to be done in that area. One of my own correspondents mentions the issue of handholds in confined spaces and says that there should be more safety thinking at the design stage.

I'm delighted to see another maritime safety bloggist - we can make a difference.
